Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, interns, physicians, medical technologists, medical assistants, ECG Technicians, Respiratory Therapists and more have had to perform blood draws at one time or another. However, they are not considered phlebotomy technicians. Earning a phlebotomy technician certification requires attending classes at local colleges or proprietary schools. The costs are very steep. The average phlebotomy technician program costs anywhere from one thousand to eleven thousand dollars. Medical health-care professionals realize that they can do the job of a phlebotomy technician but lack only the certification. The thought of spending thousands of dollars on a course which they already have experience in seems like a waste of time and money. This is the dilemma that medical health-care professionals face daily when competing with phlebotomy technicians for phlebotomy related positions.

Employers of health-care workers will hire a phlebotomy technician before a hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse or medical assistant because the phlebotomy technician has a certificate. Although the Licensed Practical Nurse and medical assistant can both do the job of the phlebotomy technician, they lack the certification. In Michigan, there is now a nursing hiring freeze. There are too many graduate nurses who do not possess the experience to find work. They too have no specialization that will allow them to compete with phlebotomy technicians.

Phlebotomy has evolved into a profession that requires specialized education and training. Apart from having to master the many required techniques and skills associated with blood drawing and sundry sample collection, phlebotomists also need to ensure compliance with safety and prevention regulations, as well as to develop keen judgment, good attitude, and highly effective communication skills to successfully interact with patients. They are, after all, the vital link between the patient and the lab, and are responsible for the collection of quality specimens by the safest means possible, that ultimately impact on the final outcome of test results.

Everyone needs that edge that will set them apart from the rest. Employers would be more inclined to hire a licensed practical nurse or medical assistant who possessed a certification as a phlebotomy technician. The employer recognizes that the medical assistant and licensed practical nurse can multitask while being proficient in phlebotomy. Medical assistants are always drawing blood. Phlebotomy is part of their curriculum. However, medical assistants are not considered phlebotomy technicians. Employers are very specific as to the professional certification that is required for the job.

Now more than ever, employers such as hospitals, doctors offices, out-patient labs and nursing homes require medical health-care workers to perform blood draws. They are going so far as to hire phlebotomy technicians to train their employees. This wouldn’t be the case if their employees were already certified as a phlebotomy technician.

Professor Nancy Kimmel, Registered Nurse, PhD and Certified Phlebotomy Instructor, realized the importance of offering affordable online accelerated phlebotomy certification to those with previous experience in phlebotomy.

Professor Kimmel has been teaching for over twenty years. She has taught at Lawrence Technological University in the Mechanical Engineering Department, at Henry Ford Community College in the math, physics and engineer department and at Oakland University in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Professor Kimmel has spent years working at Oakwood Hospital as a Registered Nurse in CCU, Medical Surgical Floors and in the Intermediate Intensive Care Unit. She has also worked in home care. Professor Kimmel has been an ardent educator in the Metro Detroit area since 2002 and now instructs students at her own school, Phlebotomy Career Training http://www.phlebotomycareertraining.com in Garden City, Michigan. Her accomplishments are many. She has been awarded a U.S. Patent and has authored several books on nursing. One of her books entitled, Pass The N.E.T., is on its sixth printing and can be found at the college bookstores of Wayne County Community College and at Henry Ford Community College. She states, “I believe in helping people. That is what I do as a nurse and as a teacher. The greatest gift to give someone is knowledge and that is what I try to do daily with my students.” Professor Kimmel has spent hours writing online tutorials to help her students in class. Now she is able to offer a complete online course dedicated to those with previous experience in phlebotomy. She states; “I have come a long way to achieve my goals. Working as a professor at colleges and universities, I would see so many students give up due to the high tuition costs. I always wanted to help others achieve their dreams. Being able to offer an affordable online class is the best way to begin.”
A phlebotomist is a healthcare professional who is trained to obtain blood samples from patients. They may take blood from a patient for a laboratory test or for a blood donation. The Phlebotomists on occasion may take finger-prick hemoglobin tests, which doesn’t involve using a needle. Most of time phlebotomists use needles to extract blood.

Phlebotomy Career Training http://www.phlebotomycareertraining is a licensed proprietary school in the state of Michigan. Phlebotomy Career Training has won approval of its curriculum from Michigan Works and the Michigan J.E.T. Program for Welfare and Human Services. Professor Kimmel is the administrator and instructor of all the courses at the school. Professor Kimmel offers the traditional classroom instruction in phlebotomy. The on site courses are six weeks in duration and include forty hours of lecture an fifty hours of lab.
The online Phlebotomy Technician Course is $199. It is a one month class. Students are given a log-in code and access to all tests, reading, and video tutorials by professor Kimmel. Once students complete the class they are required to take a final exam. Upon passing the final, Professor Kimmel will then send to them their Michigan Certificate for Phlebotomy Technician. Professor Kimmel’s school is also certified by the National Healthcareer Association. Therefore, once student’s pass their final exam they can also sit for their National Phlebotomy Certification exam in their state. The National Healthcareer Association is the benchmark for accreditation of phlebotomy certification. Students not present in the state of Michigan will still be able to take the online course and receive not only certification from the state of Michigan but nationwide. The students will receive upon course completion, a graduation certificate from Phlebotomy Career Training  seal with school license number as well as a transcript.
Students interested in phlebotomy must have a formal education and training. The most common way for a student to become a phlebotomist is to enroll in a program that may last from four months to one year. These programs are available at colleges and vocational schools. Most states have additional requirements for phlebotomists. Potential phlebotomists should check with their state’s regulations to ensure that they fulfilled all the requirements before applying to a job posting.

Phlebotomy technicians, or phlebotomists, perform a valuable role in the medical field. By drawing blood samples for laboratory tests, they help doctors detect, diagnose, and treat disease. Here’s everything you need to know about phlebotomy technician salaries.

Phlebotomy Technician Salary Range
Phlebotomist salaries range from $21,356 to $25,779, nationally, according to Salary.com. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that phlebotomists earn from $18,720 to $25,168, with a median salary of $21,944. A 2002 survey conducted by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) reported that phlebotomy technicians earned a median hourly wage of $10.55.

Starting Phlebotomy Technician Salaries
The average starting phlebotomy technician salary, nationally, is $20,000, according to What2Be.Net. Delta College estimates that starting phlebotomist wages are between $8 and $10.30 per hour.

Certification and Phlebotomy Technician Salaries
Certification is not a requirement of employment for phlebotomy technicians; however, it can increase a phlebotomist’s earnings. Several national organizations, including the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Sciences (NAACS), offer certifying examinations. Salary levels are affected most by occupational setting (hospitals, blood banks, and private laboratories), experience, and state/area of residence.

Career Description
Phlebotomy technicians collect and process a patient’s blood for future use or analysis. Working as part of a lab team, they are trained to draw blood samples for medical tests and blood donations. They also must also keep careful records of blood tests.

Phlebotomy requires significant patient contact. At times, for example, phlebotomy technicians must calm nervous patients. Employment can be found in a number of settings, including doctors’ offices, hospitals, clinics, blood banks, and independent laboratories.

Educational Requirements
Becoming a phlebotomy technician requires a high school diploma or equivalent and usually three months or more of specialized training, either on-the-job or through a formalized program. Phlebotomy training includes venipuncture, record keeping, and sample safety.
Professor Kimmel states: “This is a most wonderful opportunity that I can offer to medical health-care professionals. Students all over the United States are eligible to take the online phlebotomy course and earn national certification. We also have national approval for our ECG course. I am so excited to hear from the new students who will enroll and will help them all that I can.”

Online Phlebotomy Certification;
Here at Phlebotomy Career Training, we recognize the need for accelerated training for those already in the medical profession and who may be a phlebotomist but lack certification. Physicians, nurses, RN’s, LPN’s, LVN’s and Medical Technologists sometimes require extra training with regard to their phlebotomy skills. They can now certify via taking the phlebotomy online course. The online course is an accelerated course and must be completed within one month.

Students are required to submit their resumes and documentation of at least 25 venipunctures  in addition to 15 capillary sticks, signed by a RN, MD or Licensed/Registered Phlebotomy Technician. Resumes and documentation can be faxed to 734-762-7085

Once student’s enroll they will be sent via e-mail an access code to the online site. Students are given access to video lectures and tutorials, as well as all study materials and practice tests.

  6. Brandee says:

    Im a medical assistant and Ive already had prior phlebotomy training and have done blood drawing. I was wondering how would you fax in the proof of the 25 blood draws. And would you already have to have done them before the course or are these blood draws your sending in the ones you do during the course?

  7. Brandee says:

    Oh Im sorry I just read the answer to my 1st question. The other question is the blood draws have to be done in front of an RN, MD or Licensed/Registered Phlebotomy Technician. How would we go about doing this? I mean could we come to the school campus and do them there? Or would we have to find an office or clinic that would allow us to “intern” and get our 25 draws and 15 capillary sticks?

  8. admin says:

    Hi Brandee;
    I suggest that you come in to speak with one of our admission specialists or instructors. They will be able to answer all your questions.
