Phlebotomist Quality #2. Your in the profession to help people.
Day in and day out you will be dealing with the young and old, the sick, the well and the very ill. If you main goal is to help the quality of their life by obtaining the perfect blood specimen and provide kindness and compassion, then your in it to win it for all the right reasons.
Phlebotomist Quality #3. You like being part of a team.
Phlebotomists are known as vampires or thieves in the night. Really though they are a part of a team of healthcare providers. You need to be able to communicate with the nurses, physicians, laboratory supervisors, lab technicians and fellow phlebotomists, whether you are working 2am until 7am or 9-5. Being a team player is a skill that each healthcare provider must possess to help patients.
Phlebotomist Quality #4. You are willing to help another staff member if asked.
So you are making your rounds and one of the nurses asks if you can help them lift a patient or get someone off the bedpan. Do you do it? Yes, absolutely! If you can handle vomit and stool, then you are are going to be the most fantastic phlebotomist.
Phlebotomist Quality #5. You welcome constructive criticism.
Yes, yes, we know. No one likes to be told that they are wrong. But let’s face it. You are just starting out, and nobody’s perfect. Also there is always more to learn. So if you can take constructive criticism gracefully like a pro, then your even closer to being the best phlebotomist ever.
Phlebotomist Quality #6. You always want to improve in your profession.
While being a phlebotomist takes about 2 months of training, there is always more to learn. If you’re the kind of person who is constantly striving to learn more about your profession of phlebotomy, then you should start applying to a phlebotomy program, “Stat”.
Phlebotomist Quality #7. You have the utmost respect for patients and co-workers privacy.
No one likes a busy body. Especially in the healthcare field. If you even talk about your patient to someone who is not involved directly in their care you will have violated the cardinal rule of health care, “The HIPAA Law”. If you are respectful and private about what patient’s tell you as well as respectful of other peers then you are a phlebotomist but don’t even know it yet.
Phlebotomist Quality #8. The willingness to work overtime when asked.
Now we all know that overtime is great when we have time on our hands and need the money. But how about when the hospital needs you? Have you considered what you would say to your supervisor who approaches you and asks if you can stay 5 hours over your shift? I you understand the dilemma that many hospitals have with trying to keep shifts covered, then you will understand that they are asking you because they really need you. Of course you could say, “no”. But would you? If you are reading this and are saying to yourself, “of course, I would say yes.” Then you should start job searching today, even before you start class, because you are amazing.
Phlebotomist Quality #9. You will go out of your way to help someone.
So here’s a true scenario. You are done with your shift. You are tired, hungry and sore from walking over 10 miles during an 8 hour shift. (So if you don’t know it already, phlebotomists don’t always have time to take an elevator. So they have to use the stairs.) A patient on a walker approaches you, yes you. Even though there are hundred or more people around you on your way out of the hospital, they ask you if you could help them find their family member who is going to surgery. If you say yes, then you are so much closer to being the award winning phlebotomist of the year. Saying yes, will not only help relive the patient’s family from undue stress, but make them feel more confident about the hospital where their loved one will be staying the next few days.
Phlebotomist Quality #10. You know when it’s time to take care of you.
Surprised by this question? Don’t be. The problem with a lot of medical health care providers is that they care so much about others that they forget to take care of themselves, such as not showering when they really should, not getting enough rest or eating enough. Please, please do the world, yourself and your patient’s a favor and take care of yourself. You will be no good to anyone if you don’t. Honestly, have you ever met anyone in a good mood who hadn’t eaten or slept. Imagine how your patients would feel. Don’t forget, you get pretty up close to draw blood. Not only that, a health body equals a healthy attitude. The one thing that you don’t want to happen is that you burn out. We need good phlebotomists. So if you said, “can do” to this question then my friend it’s time to enroll at phlebotomy career training.
