Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Internship Requirements

Phlebotomy Technicians must complete a clinical of 30 venipunctures as a part of the Phlebotomy Technician clinical core requirements to graduate from our program. Each draw must be supervised and signed off on a blood draw log and externship forms that will be provided to the student.

ECG Technicians must complete a clinical of 40 hours of live EKGs observation or 10 live EKGs for our EKG clinical core requirements to graduate our program. Each EKG requirement must be supervised and signed off on a clinical competency form that will be provided to the student.

A virtual alternative is available for ECG Technicians who are unable to find an internship in their area.

Telemetry Technicians in the Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program are not required to complete a clinical externship. Students can focus on studying and completing their course In-Person.

IV Technicians in the Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician program are not required to submit a virtual internship video because of the venipuncture requirement under the Phlebotomy Technician section. Venipuncture technique is practiced in both phlebotomy and IV insertion so this skill is covered in the phlebotomy clinical internship.

Each skill requirement must be supervised and signed off on a clinical competency form that will be provided to the student.

Phlebotomy Career Training students may begin working immediately after graduation.  Students will be provided access to Phlebotomy Career Training’s Job board where they can explore and apply to jobs which employers have asked our staff to post just for our students.  There are also opportunities for internships, should the student wish to train more in their field of specialty rather than begin working with pay.  Physicians, laboratories, hospitals and urgent cares contact Phlebotomy Career Training weekly seeking our graduates.  The Job Board contains videos on how to interview for hospital positions, free resume template downloads, job fairs and much more.  Students will be given a pass code to access the job board.

FAQs About Our In-Person Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Program

Do the In-Person courses require an in-person test?

Students will need to pass a Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Certification Exam after completing the course to receive their certification which is taken In-Person.  Students will be able to take all their final exams at home online.  Each of the national exams must be taken at the school by appointment.  Exams are administered Monday through Friday starting at 9am.

How does the internship/ externship work?

As part of the Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Certification Program, students will be performing their clinicals at the school through Dearborn Diagnostics Laboratory, which is a CLIA waived lab.  Students will be instructed on how to draw blood, perform ECG’s and start IV’s.  Students will come to lab/school during assigned blood draw days with a volunteer (over the age of 18) to be supervised by our instructors in the technique of blood drawing.  Students should plan to achieve anywhere from 15-30 blood draws.  We do not have the students take full tubes of blood from their volunteers.  For students who do not have any volunteers, we suggest that they use the buddy system with their fellow students.  Our staff will also try to pair students up who do not have volunteers.  Students will have hands on practice starting I.V.’s on simulated practice arms and learn to use the IVAC machine to calculate drip rate.   Students will learn to use a real Defibrillation and see how it works. Don’t worry, we are not going to put it in shock mode.  Students will also learn the basics of CPR.  This does not mean that they will be certified in CPR, but students will be taught how to save lives with CPR as part of their course.  Students can expect to come to class once a week for 4 hours for 8 weeks.  This time does not include blood draws.  Students will begin blood draws around week 4 or 5 and come to draw days which are separate from their school meeting times.
