Online IV Technician Course & Certification

Overview

IV stands for intravenous venipuncture; this is the process of inserting a needle and catheter into a vein in the arm. IVs are used to infuse medications and provide hydration. IV technicians can work almost anywhere from clinics and medical spas to hospitals and labs. If you are interested in getting into healthcare without spending years in school, this course may be the perfect fit for you.

The 100% online course curriculum includes principles of proper venipuncture technique, proper IV technique, basic principles of intravenous insertion and flushing, and techniques of intravenous line establishment. Students will receive an IV venipuncture simulation kit to practice and perform their skills in IV insertion.

Upon course completion, students will need to pass the online certification exam to receive their IV Technician Certification. Our online classes offer national accrediting exams which allow students to work anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.

Student Experience While Taking Our Online IV Class

The online IV Technician Training is designed to work with your schedule. Courses are self-paced and accessible 24/7. The modules are also mobile-friendly. The curriculum can be completed in as little as 4 weeks, but you will have as long as 6 months to complete the course from the time of enrollment.

Students will be assigned an instructor who will send them a welcome email that includes information about the student account as well as the registered program. Students can expect to receive correspondence Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm EST. Your assigned instructor can help you with any questions you may have while taking the course.

Online IV Class Prerequisites

A high school diploma or equivalent GED is recommended to enroll in the Online IV Technician Course.

Phlebotomy or venipuncture experience within the last 6 months is recommended although not required. This includes full-time experience practicing venipuncture as a practicing phlebotomist, medical assistant, registered nurse, LPN, NP, PA, MD, dental hygienist, dentist, EMT, Paramedic, or FireFighter.

Online IV Class Curriculum (Modules & Exams)

The IV Technician Training includes 40 hours of course content and covers over 20 individual course topics including:

  • Principles of proper IV technique
  • Selection of appropriate venipuncture sites for intravenous therapy
  • Various types of intravenous solutions
  • Safety, hazards, and complications related to venipuncture
  • Techniques of intravenous line establishment, including on-going fluids and saline lock devices
  • Compassionate patient care
  • Maintenance and use of equipment
  • Record keeping and documentation
  • Basic principles of anatomy and physiology
  • Disease process
  • Therapeutic communication
  • Hazardous materials management
  • Patient assessment

Students will need to pass an IV Certification Exam after completing the course to receive their certification.

IV Internship Requirements

Students will be provided a venipuncture kit to complete their online virtual internship and satisfy the core clinical requirement.

Students with prior experience may submit a letter from their employer on company letterhead or a notarized resume as proof of experience in the last 6 months to waive their clinical requirement.

Do the online courses require an in-person test?

There are multiple national certification exams that PCT graduates may take. We offer one complimentary attempt at the NTA National IV Certification Exam, which is online.

How does the internship/ externship work?

As part of the IV Technician Certification Program, students are required to complete an internship that will allow their instructor to observe and/or practice their IV skills. You may see this internship referred to as an externship or clinical in various materials; these all refer to the same requirement. Students are responsible for securing an internship. Your instructor can provide you with a letter to help you secure an internship.

How do the credit hours work?

Students who complete the full IV Technician Certification Program will receive 20 CEUs through CAPCE. Read more about the credit hours here.

Is Phlebotomy Career Training accredited?

Phlebotomy Career Training is a licensed proprietary school in the state of Michigan and our National Testing Partners which have approved our programs are accredited. This means that the student who graduates and takes their national exam will have accreditation through the National Testing Organization and is eligible to work anywhere in the United States. These organizations include:

Phlebotomy Career Training does not offer Credit hours and therefore does not accept financial aid. We are a private for-profit post-secondary school, licensed by the state of Michigan. Phlebotomy Career Training offers clock hours. These clock hours can transfer to some colleges and universities for credit hours.

IV is a great way to get into healthcare without any prior experience in the field. And there are many advancement opportunities for IV technicians once they get their foot in the door.
