The online medication aide class is designed for those who are already working in health care as nurses aides or home health aides. This course will cover the important concepts of medication pass with respect to those medications that can be taken orally, sublingually, transdermal, and subcutaneously. Students will learn just as nurses do about the seven rights of medication pass and the dangers associated with medication errors.
This is a very serious course. Students will learn about the following groups of medications such as angiotensin conversion enzyme inhibitors, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, insulin, antiarrhythmics, cardiac glycosides, renal medications, lipid lowering drugs, and fat soluble vitamins.
In addition to knowing the medications and their brand names, students will also have to know their generic names, dosaging, route, times given, pharmacological effects and the pharmacogenetics.
Students should have prior knowledge of being able to take vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse and pulse oximetry.
The course will review the desired effects of the medication and how they work as well as the undesirable side effects and which side effects constitute a medical emergency.
Students will write 3 one page papers on medications which their teacher will choose.
Patient assessment is key when passing medications. If a patient’s vital signs are too low or unstable, the medication technician should immediately reach out to their supervisor whether it be the nurse or physician.
Students will be instructed in the importance of patient identification and how to go about identifying a patient who is not alert and oriented times three.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive their medication aide certification. It is up to the student to verify with their state board of nursing if taking an online class will be accepted. There are certain states such as Texas and Kansas where medication pass classes have to be taken in person in a live classroom.
If students have prior experience in medication pass, they should submit this to the school director for evaluation. Proof of such experience includes a letter from their supervisor or Registered nurses on a letterhead. This can be emailed or faxed to the school at
Students will have immediate access to course materials upon enrollment. All assignments must be completed within a three month time frame.
The final exam must be taken at a proctored location. This means that students will go to a location specified by the school and test online for their certification. They have 2 attempts and must pass with a 75% or higher.
