Online Patient Care Technician Course & Certification Overview

Are you looking to broaden your certifications in the medical field? The Patient Care Technician training program is for those who are looking for higher levels of employment. Patient Care Technicians perform many duties such as performing electrocardiograms (ECGs), drawing blood (venipunctures), making a patient’s bed, performing oral care & denture care, peri-care, emptying, and measuring a urine drainage bag, setting up feeding tubes, passing medications and charting.

The 100% online course curriculum includes taking vital signs, patient assessment, patient care, documentation, venipuncture, electrocardiograms, and more. They will also become knowledgeable about inpatient management, HIPPA, and OSHA regulations, as well as effective bedside manner, mental health, and professional conduct. Patient care technicians work in hospitals, emergency rooms, physician offices, urgent care clinics, cardiac care units, intensive care units, and with the physicians on home care rounds.

Upon course completion, students will need to pass the online certification exam to receive their Patient Care Technician Certification. Our online classes offer national accrediting exams which allow students to work anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.

Student Experience While Taking Our Online Patient Care Technician Class

The online Patient Care Technician Training is designed to work with your schedule. Courses are self-paced and accessible 24/7. The modules are also mobile-friendly. The curriculum can be completed in as little as 4 weeks, but you will have as long as 6 months to complete the course from the time of enrollment. 

Students will be assigned an instructor who will send them a welcome email that includes information about the student account as well as the registered program. Students can expect to receive correspondence Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm EST. Your assigned instructor can help you with any questions you may have while taking the course.

Online Patient Care Technician Class Prerequisites

A high school diploma or equivalent GED is recommended to enroll in the Online Patient Care Technician Course.

Phlebotomy Career Training’s Patient Care Technician program is designed for students with at least 6 months of experience as a CNA, Home Health Aide, Direct Care Worker, or other medical professional so previous experience is required.

Online Patient Care Technician Class Curriculum (Modules & Exams)

The Patient Care Technician Training includes 72 hours of course content and covers over 15 individual course topics including:

  • Taking vital signs
  • SOAP Note charting
  • Infection control
  • HIPPA and OSHA regulations
  • Assisting with minor surgical procedures
  • Performing injections such as intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous
  • Performing electrocardiograms
  • Performing phlebotomies
  • Drug and pregnancy testing
  • Medical supply management
  • Verbal therapeutic communication
  • Creating a safe effective environment
  • Administrative tasks including organization, scheduling

Students will need to pass a Patient Care Technician Certification Exam after completing the course to receive their certification. Phlebotomy Career Training’s Patient Care Technician program is recognized by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) as well as the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). All Patient Care Technician students receive one complimentary voucher to take the NHA and AMCA National Patient Care Technician Certification Exam. To be able to use the voucher students must schedule their exam at least 6 weeks prior to the expiration of their course.  

Students should always check with their state department for their licensing or certification requirements. Some states may require additional training or examination before becoming qualified to work in that state.

Patient Care Technician Internship Requirements

Phlebotomy Career Training’s Patient Care Technician program is designed for students with at least 6 months of experience as CNAs, Home Health Aides, Direct Care Workers, or other medical professionals. Students must submit a letter from their employer on company letterhead or a notarized resume as proof of experience.

Students are required to complete clinicals in patient assessment, phlebotomy, and ECG on a given clinical competency form. Students are required to locate and establish their local internship.

Do the online courses require an in-person test?

There are multiple national certification exams that PCT graduates may take. We offer one complimentary attempt at the National Patient Care Technician Certification Exam through the AMCA or the NHA. These examinations can be administered both online or in-person depending on the organization and local requirements.

How does the internship/ externship work?

As part of the Patient Care Technician Certification Program, students are required to complete an internship that will allow them to observe and/or practice their Medication Aide skills. Students will be given clinical competency forms by their instructor that they will fill out and turn in to receive their certification. You may see this internship referred to as an externship or clinical in various materials; these all refer to the same requirement. Students are responsible for securing an internship. Your instructor can provide you with a letter to help you secure an internship.

Is Phlebotomy Career Training accredited?

Phlebotomy Career Training is a licensed proprietary school in the state of Michigan and our National Testing Partners which have approved our programs are accredited. This means that the student who graduates and takes their national exam will have accreditation through the National Testing Organization and is eligible to work anywhere in the United States. These organizations include:

Phlebotomy Career Training does not offer Credit hours and therefore does not accept financial aid. We are a private for-profit post-secondary school, licensed by the state of Michigan. Phlebotomy Career Training offers clock hours. These clock hours can transfer to some colleges and universities for credit hours.
