Phlebotomy Career Training’s Patient Care Technician program is a fast paced 4 week course that teaches the seasoned medical health care provider the necessary skills to work in hospitals and emergency rooms. The patient care technician has many responsibilities that blend the professions of certified nursing assistant, phlebotomy and electrocardiogram technician. Students interested in taking this class are required to have prior patient care background. This background can be either as a certified nursing assistant, adult care worker or direct care worker or home health aide. Students will learn how to draw blood, perform electrocardiograms (EKG), take a detailed history and physical of a real patient at our clinical site and take SOAP notes. The term SOAP is an abbreviation for subjective, objective, assessment and plan as it pertains to helping the patient in either their immediate illness or long term.
The patient care technician will learn advanced medical terminology, how to work with physicians and nurses in emergency situations. Students will be taught how to recognize and assess for pain and perform health and wellness checks.
Study materials and online access to course modules will be provided to the students on the first day of class. The student can expect hands on learning in the classroom interspersed with lecture and demonstrations from their instructors.
The one day clinical will take place during a scheduled class day. Students will meet at the designated clinical site and their instructor will assign them a patient.
Students are expected to have their uniforms, lab coats, notebook, stethoscope and badge.
Prior to beginning class we ask that students have their negative TB test turned in. The TB skin test can be done at any urgent care or family physicians office. If the student is unsure where to go they may call the school for sites which perform the TB skin tests and pick up a form for the physician or nurse to fill out. TB skin test are good for one to two years depending on whether the student received the two step Gold or the basic test. Chest X-rays are accepted for up to 5 years. There will be a $35 urine drug screen for all students to be done here at the school per our clinical sites request by week three. Students are encouraged to purchase a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. These items can be purchased at the school or at any uniform supply store.
Graduates go on to work in the emergency rooms, cardiac care units and intensive care floors. Phlebotomy Career Training provides access to the student job board where students may take advantage of online resume templates and job openings.
Several hospitals in Michigan prefer that the patient care technician graduate also take their national exam. The preferred national exam for patient care technician is the NHA. Phlebotomy Career Training is accredited by the NHA as well as the NCCT and AMCA.
Students who wish to take the NHA Patient Care Technician national certifying exam may obtain information through our school. The NHA exam is offered only off site at a designated testing center.
