Phlebotomy Technician and ECG Technician certifications and a National Certification Exam for each course.

Phlebotomy Technician

Students will learn about the principles of proper phlebotomy technique, specimen processing, point of care testing, compassionate patient care, maintenance and use of equipment, record keeping and documentation, basic principles of anatomy and physiology, disease process, therapeutic communication, hazardous materials management, patient assessment and much more.

ECG Technician

Students will be introduced to basic nursing and patient care, HIPAA, resident rights, safety, and emergency procedures and lessons and topics that include video lecture instruction on cardiology, electrocardiography, and experiences in the interpretation of the 12 lead ECG using various multimedia. The course helps students to understand, read and interpret Electrocardiogram Lead Tracings and much more.

Student Experience

The online training for each course is designed to work with your schedule. Courses are self-paced and accessible 24/7. The modules are also mobile-friendly. The full program curriculum can be completed in as little as 8 weeks, but you will have as long as 6 months to complete the course from the time of enrollment.

Students will be assigned an instructor who will send them a welcome email that includes information about their student account and their program upon enrollment.

Program Prerequisites

A high school diploma or equivalent GED is recommended to enroll in the Online Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 program. No prior experience is required. 

Curriculum (Modules & Exams)

The full program curriculum and training includes over 200 hours of course content and covers over 45 individual course topics including:

• Principles of proper phlebotomy technique
• Specimen processing
• Point of care testing
• Review and analysis of rhythms on ECG readings
• Rhythm Analysis and Interpretation of Arrhythmias

Students will need to pass a Certification Exam for each course after completing the course to receive their certification. 

Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 Internship Requirements

Phlebotomy Internship Requirements

Phlebotomy Technicians must complete a clinical of 30 venipunctures as a part of the Phlebotomy Technician clinical core requirements to graduate from our program. Each draw must be supervised and signed off on a blood draw log and externship forms that will be provided to the student.

Urgent care centers, doctor’s offices, hospitals, and other clinics are popular internship locations. We recommend students begin their internship by the end of their second module for each course. Virtual alternatives are available for those who are unable to find an internship in their area.

A virtual alternative is available for all Phlebotomy Technicians who enroll in a Phlebotomy Technician program. Students may also complete their clinical requirements using the VSK (Virtual Simulation Kit) included upon registration. Students will work with their instructors on their phlebotomy techniques via video submissions and corrections. The student will follow the videos provided online and the instructions in their kit to complete their blood draws.

Students must send in videos of themselves drawing blood using the practice kit. Our instructors will provide the student feedback and indicate any corrections that need to be made. The student will continue this process until they have completed all 30 blood draws.

Virtual Simulation Kit for Phlebotomy Technician Students

Phlebotomy Career Training offers an alternate way for students to complete their internship in phlebotomy. The VSK (Virtual Simulation Kit) provides all the equipment to prepare students to work in laboratories and or physician offices. 

The kit will be shipped out after 5 to 7 business days of purchase.

ECG Technician Internship Requirements

ECG Technicians must complete a clinical of 40 hours of live EKGs observation or 10 live EKGs for our EKG clinical core requirements to graduate from our program. Each EKG requirement must be supervised and signed off on a clinical competency form that will be provided to the student.

Do the online courses require an in-person test?

Students will need to pass a Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 Certification Exam after completing the course to receive their certification which is taken online.

How does the internship/ externship work?

As part of the Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 Certification Program, students are required to complete an internship that will allow them to observe and/or practice their Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 skills. Students will be given clinical competency forms by their instructor that they will fill out and turn in to receive their certification. You may see this internship referred to as an externship or clinical in various materials; these all refer to the same requirement. Students are responsible for securing an internship. Your instructor can provide you with a letter to help you secure an internship.

Is Phlebotomy Career Training accredited?

Phlebotomy Career Training is a licensed proprietary school in the state of Michigan and our National Testing Partners which have approved our programs are accredited. This means that the student who graduates and takes their national exam will have accreditation through the National Testing Organization and is eligible to work anywhere in the United States. These organizations include:

Phlebotomy Career Training does not offer Credit hours and therefore does not accept financial aid. We are a private for-profit post-secondary school, licensed by the state of Michigan. Phlebotomy Career Training offers clock hours. These clock hours can transfer to some colleges and universities for credit hours.

How do the credit hours work?

Students who complete the full Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 Program will receive 16.5 CEUs through CAPCE for the NAPTP and 5.5 CEUs through CAPCE for the NTA. Read more about the credit hours here.

In most cases yes, the Phlebotomy Technician Tier 2 Certifications from PCT are valid in the United States and Canada.

Students in the state of California and the state of Washington should check their state requirements prior to enrolling.  All students should verify with their state department for their licensing or certification requirements. Some states may require additional training or examination before becoming qualified to work in that state. It is up to the student to verify with their state board of nursing or public health department if taking an online class will be accepted.
