Internship Requirements
Phlebotomy Technicians must complete a clinical of 50 live venipunctures as a part of the Phlebotomy Technician clinical core requirements to graduate from our program. Each draw must be supervised and signed off on a blood draw log and externship forms that will be provided to the student.
Phlebotomy Career Training does not place students in internships/externships. Students are required to locate an available facility or organization where they may complete their live venipunctures. Urgent care centers, doctor’s offices, hospitals, and other clinics are popular internship locations. It is recommended that students call around to their local facilities to find availability. If an affiliation agreement is required, students will be instructed to send an email to administration to begin the process.
A submission of 30 technique videos prior to the start of a live venipuncture internship is required. A VSK (Virtual Simulation Kit) is provided to students so that they may send in 30 videos that will be viewed and assessed for competency by PCT instructors. This cannot take the place of live draws which are required for graduation.
Students are required to send in video submissions of themselves practicing venipuncture techniques using the practice kit. Our instructors will provide the student with feedback and indicate any corrections that need to be made. The student will continue this process until they have completed all 30 simulated blood draws.
30 video submissions are required prior to the start of a live venipuncture internship to assess for competency. Students may not begin their internship until they have proven competency via video submissions.
IV Technicians in the Phlebotomy Technician Tier 3 program are required to submit a video submission of the venipuncture technique of a IV catheter. Our instructors will provide the student with feedback and indicate any corrections that need to be made. The student will continue this process until they have reached competency.
Each skill requirement must be supervised and signed off on a clinical competency form that will be provided to the student. Students are responsible for finding internships at their location. Urgent care centers, doctor’s offices, hospitals, and other clinics are popular internship locations. We recommend students begin their internship by the end of their second module for each course.
Students With Prior Experience
Students may submit a letter from their employer on company letterhead, a notarized resume, or other documentation as proof of experience in order to have their live venipuncture requirements waived.
Students who have previous venipuncture experience who enroll in the Online Phlebotomy Technician program, must also complete their competency requirement using the VSK (Virtual Simulation Kit). Students are required to send in video submissions of themselves practicing venipuncture techniques using the practice kit. Our instructors will provide the student with feedback and indicate any corrections that need to be made. The student will continue this process until they have completed all 30 simulated blood draws.
Virtual Simulation Kit for Phlebotomy Technician Students
Phlebotomy Career Training requires students to submit 30 video submissions using the virtual simulation kit prior to their live venipuncture internship. The VSK (Virtual Simulation Kit) provides all the equipment to prepare students for their live sticks and is not to be used on any living creature or person.
The kit will be shipped out within 15 to 17 business days after registration or purchase.
