Overview 

The need for qualified behavioral health professionals has never been more urgent. Mental Health Technicians serve on the front lines of psychiatric care — working alongside clinical teams in inpatient psychiatric units, residential treatment facilities, community mental health centers, crisis stabilization units, and substance use treatment programs to deliver consistent, compassionate, evidence-based support to patients with mental health and behavioral conditions. 

PCT Institute of Health Care’s Mental Health Technician program is a 250-clock-hour comprehensive certification curriculum that takes students from the foundational principles of mental health care through advanced clinical topics including DSM-5 diagnostic categories, psychopharmacology, crisis intervention, evidence-based therapeutic modalities, and professional ethics. 

No prior healthcare experience is required. The program is self-paced, nationally aligned, and includes the cost of your certification exam before the final month of your enrollment period. 

Student Experience 

The Mental Health Technician program is fully self-paced and accessible 24/7 through the PCT Institute student portal. The curriculum is mobile-friendly and designed to fit the schedules of working adults, parents, and career-changers. Students have up to six months from the date of enrollment to complete the program. 

Upon registration, you’ll receive immediate access to your course materials and a welcome email from your dedicated instructor within 24 hours. Your instructor is available throughout the program to answer questions and provide guidance. Zoom tutoring sessions are available at an affordable rate with experienced clinical professionals.

Prerequisites 

Students must be at least 18 years of age. No prior healthcare experience is required. A high school diploma or GED is not required but strongly recommended. This program does not include a clinical externship requirement. 

Curriculum (Modules & Core Competencies) 

Core training areas include: 

  • Module 1: Foundations of Mental Health and the MHT Role — scope of practice, professional responsibilities, and the behavioral health care continuum 
  • Module 2: Anatomy, Physiology, and the Brain — neurological foundations of mental health, neurotransmitter systems, and the biological basis of psychiatric conditions 
  • Module 3: Therapeutic Communication and Crisis Intervention — active listening, de-escalation, crisis response protocols, and safety planning 
  • Module 4: DSM-5 Diagnostic Categories and Major Disorders — diagnostic criteria, clinical presentations, and implications for patient care 
  • Module 5: Anxiety, Trauma, Eating, and Personality Disorders — specialized knowledge of high-prevalence conditions and their clinical management 
  • Module 6: Psychopharmacology and Medication Management — psychiatric medication categories, mechanisms, side effects, and monitoring responsibilities 
  • Module 7: Psychiatric Assessment and Clinical Observation — structured observation, mental status examination, and clinical documentation 
  • Module 8: Community Mental Health and Outpatient Services — community resources, outpatient programming, and continuity of care 
  • Module 9: Evidence-Based Therapeutic Modalities — CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and group facilitation 
  • Module 10: Substance Use Disorders and Co-Occurring Conditions — dual diagnosis, treatment approaches, and patient support strategies 
  • Module 11: Professional Ethics, Boundaries, and Legal Compliance — scope of practice, mandatory reporting, documentation standards, and patient rights

Is there a clinical externship requirement? 

No. The Mental Health Technician program does not include a mandatory clinical externship. All training is completed through the online curriculum. 

When do I take the certification exam? 

The certification exam is included in your tuition. Students should schedule their exam before the final month of their enrollment period to ensure they have time to complete it within their course window. 

What types of settings do MHTs work in?
